Jim Carrey, in fact, wanted his character to expire but instead we’re told that Chip, who survives the fall, will find another person to attach himself to while Steven and his girlfriend (Leslie Mann) sign off with a disappointing “Let’s go home,” after watching a disturbed man nearly kill himself.Įven if the connection between The Cable Guy, “Nice Shot”, and Budd Dwyer is accidental in the context of the film, it’s a pretty happy accident. The better ending, it seems, would be if Chip had died on the dish - sacrificing himself to send the bolder message. The finale of The Cable Guy cheats us of furthering this connection. He is hopelessly dependant on television to “babysit” him - his father wasn’t around and his mother left him in front of the screen. And though Chip is best suited to receive Dwyer’s message, or any like it, he’s not suited to deal with the consequences.

The Cable Guy wants you to look but then turn your TV off as we see extras doing when Chip blows out the cable satellite with his fall. Dwyer required that people turn their TVs on to look, despite all instincts, at the most difficult attributes of culture. In a way, Chip is Dwyer’s audience: a media-literate, TV nut who absorbed the meaning of the politician’s act through the medium. But is “Nice Shot” foreshadowing for Chip’s attempt on his own life? Of his public martyrdom? Does Kurt Cobain have anything to do with this? It’s already a bit dark before you realize what Filter is singing about. “Nice Shot” is par for the ’90s with its LOUD-quiet-LOUD, sky-splitting guitar flourishes.
If Steven didn’t suspect something was weird with this guy already, he watches as Chip unnecessarily muscles his way through YMCA-level pickup ball. In the scene with the Filter song, Chip crashes a basketball game Steven and his friends are playing. When he fails and is cornered, he attempts suicide at a giant satellite dish. Once Chip has installed cable in Steven’s apartment, he quickly invades every aspect of his life in an attempt to gain a friend. (“…the facts of life from The Facts of Life,” etc.). The box-office disappointment and cult classic tells the story of Steven (Matthew Broderick) who is stalked and manipulated by Chip the cable guy: an obsessive who was raised exclusively by television. (Chill, this isn’t a thing about Jim Carrey performing career suicide by starring in this movie.) The song took a real, political discussion and broadcasted it on TV, radio, and in film.Īnd though it also appears in Tales From the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight and a commercial for the National Hockey League, I’m curious why a song about public suicide is featured in The Cable Guy. Dwyer insisted he was innocent and hoped to express how a questionable legal system could victimize someone like him. Dwyer did so by calling a televised press conference where he did the unthinkable, guaranteeing his act would be studied in colleges and universities. Budd Dwyer, a Pennsylvania politician who was convicted of taking a bribe and who, before his sentencing, shot and killed himself on live TV in 1987. It’s a myth that Filter’s 1995 hit “Hey Man, Nice Shot” is about Kurt Cobain.
